Context<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Municipal Markets of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria<\/strong>, such as the Mercado Central and the Mercado del Puerto, are iconic venues that blend history, local community and shopping. However, in today\u2019s increasingly digital world, these traditional markets must adapt to remain relevant, competitive and sustainable in a context characterized by the growing dominance of large retail outlets and digital platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To achieve this, Sagulpa<\/strong>, a municipal entity established by the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council, has launched a pioneering smart digitalization project. As part of the FEDER Canarias 2021\u20132027<\/strong> program, the initiative aims to transform these markets into connected, efficient environments focused on the consumer experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Challenge<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main challenge of this innovative project was to transform two historic markets into smart spaces while preserving their daily operations and distinctive identity. Several key issues had to be addressed to achieve this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Digitizing an existing infrastructure without carrying out complex or invasive construction work<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Deploying a scalable, energy-efficient IoT <\/strong>(Internet of Things) network<\/strong> in complex urban commercial environments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Ensuring public ownership of the data<\/strong> generated and integrating it with the city\u2019s Digital Twin <\/strong>and municipal Open Data <\/strong>portal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Enabling citizen-focused functionalities<\/strong>, such as personalized promotions and real-time contextual information.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
