Koelus and Sagulpa transform two historic markets in the Canary Islands into Smart City benchmarks
April 21, 2026The deployment of a private IoT network based on LoRaWAN® technology makes it possible to modernize water consumption metering, integrate data into the customer’s control system, and improve operational visibility in an industrial facility of approximately 18 hectares.
Challenge
The customer’s industrial plant, covering approximately 18 hectares, uses water as a critical resource across multiple stages of its production process. However, the existing metering infrastructure had significant limitations, including a limited number of monitoring points, obsolete meters with no communication capabilities, and very limited visibility of consumption by area and process stage. These limitations made it more difficult to control operations, analyze water usage across the entire facility, and detect inefficiencies
To address this challenge, Inmarepro and Koelus launched a joint project aimed at modernizing the existing instrumentation and digitalizing water consumption readings through industrial IoT technologies. This approach eliminates the need for cabling work and minimizes the impact on factory operations.
Solution
The project was approached from two complementary perspectives.
Inmarepro led the modernization of the metering infrastructure, replacing obsolete meters and incorporating new measurement points in critical areas of the plant. These changes improved the granularity and traceability of water consumption.
Meanwhile,Koelus was responsible for digitalizing the reading system, by deploying the IoT devices required to capture water consumption data and integrate it directly into the customer’s control system. This was carried out through its MSE (Management Systems Extender) solution, which extends and enhances the capabilities of traditional control systems, by adding new measurement points without cabling and enabling real-time data availability through an efficient and scalable wireless communications system based on a private LoRaWAN® network.
Benefits
Implementing this project represented a paradigm shift in how the industrial plant manages water consumption The main benefits include:
- Greater visibility and operational control of water consumption, thanks to distributed and digitalized metering by area and process.
- Reduced costs, deployment time, and implementation complexity, by eliminating the need for cabling and installation works across the plant.
- Integration with the customer’s control system, enabling operational monitoring of consumption from its own industrial tools.
- Scalable technological infrastructure, allowing the system to evolve and incorporate new use cases by leveraging the private IoT network already deployed.
